IT’S NOT THE ELECTORAL SYSTEM STUPID

Why the Israeli electoral system is no worse than others and should not be changed.

22 countries have been continuously democratic since 1948. They include: Austria, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Costa Rica, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, France and the United States. Twelve of these have an electoral system similar to Israel’s: proportional election by party list, and multiple parties in a parliamentary system. They include: Austria, Belgium, Costa Rica, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, India, Israel, Luxembourg, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland and the Netherlands. The Dutch system is almost identical to that of Israel: proportional election by party list, in a single electoral region and multiple parties in a parliamentary system.
